🔥 AI News: Who stole the chips?

Nobody 'stole' the chips; however, recent headlines reveal a fierce competition for Nvidia chips as major tech companies race to secure these critical resources for AI development (However, there is reportedly an underground network smuggling these chips to China). Here's how some industry giants are securing the goods:

  1. Andreessen Horowitz's Strategic Stash: Known for its sharp eye on future tech, Andreessen Horowitz is not just betting on companies, it's also amassing a significant stash of AI chips. This move underscores a broader strategy where funding and expertise might not be enough without securing the underlying hardware crucial for AI development. Read more about Andreessen Horowitz’s strategy here.
  2. Elon Musk's xAI Expansion: Elon Musk's xAI, launched to compete with entities like OpenAI and Google, is making massive hardware demands. The training of their Grok 2 model utilized around 20,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, with future models projected to require up to 100,000 chips. Discover more about Musk’s supercomputer plans here.
  3. Meta's Aggressive Accumulation: Meta is also a key player in this race, aiming to amass at least 350,000 Nvidia chips by the end of this year. Such large-scale procurements highlight the intense demand for AI-capable hardware. Learn more about Meta’s chip strategy here.

What This Means: As major tech players secure vast quantities of Nvidia chips, the race intensifies not just for current supply but also for future solutions. This surge in demand could stimulate the market, encouraging new players to enter and expand the supply chain. While the giants build their reserves, this dynamic market offers a prime opportunity for emerging chip manufacturers to innovate and meet the growing needs of the AI industry. This is not just a challenge, but an exciting period of growth that could see new advancements and collaborations in the tech world.

📖 What We're Consuming

We have an internal slack channel called #ai-news-pulse. Here’s what our team shared in the channel this past week:

Using AI as a Solopreneur: Plenty of businesses have learned how using AI can help them save time, but solopreneurs are reaping the biggest benefits. Imagine getting the work done that you’d expect from a small team, but you’re a one-person show! Raunaq Singh outlined just how he uses AI to run and scale Unwrangle as a solopreneur - lots of great tips in this Substack article!

Anthropic Outpacing Open AI? The reaction to Anthropic’s drop of Claude 3.5 Sonnet has been largely positive, with many critics stating that Anthropic is outpacing OpenAI on multiple benchmarks. It can only get more exciting from here, as the competition ramps up, the quality of the products from both Anthropic and OpenAI will most certainly improve. So who’s the real winner, here? (hint: it’s us, the end users).

Text to video just got an upgrade: The quality difference in a few short years is staggering, and Runway’s latest Gen 3 Alpha model has us doing double-takes. Some videos are nearly indistinguishable from live-filmed video. All you have to do is give it a prompt and wait for it to generate your video. If you’re interested in learning more, take a look at Runway’s Gen 3 Alpha launch announcement here.

Could the next generation of apps be database and infrastructure companies? According to Gokul Rajaram, in an agentic future, database and infrastructure companies will become application companies, because agents don’t need a software UX. What do you think about this?

Microsoft, Apple will not join OpenAI’s board: There’s growing scrutiny regarding Big Tech’s influence over artificial intelligence, which has caused Microsoft and Apple to drop plans to take on board roles at OpenAI. Regulators have expressed concern that they threaten to concentrate access to the most innovative large language models, since they already dominate other platforms. Was this a good move by Microsoft and Apple?
