The Ultimate ChatGPT Prompt Generator For Ecommerce Marketing

As of August 2023, it's been nine months since ChatGPT was released for public use. There has been a tremendous amount of hype around the tool.

ChatGPT marked an inflection point in the progress of AI. Since its release, AI has suddenly become ubiquitous.

So now that ChatGPT has completely changed your life... wait, it hasn't?!

Guess what? You're not alone. The majority of people still struggle to get true value out of the tool. (Yes, even the ones paying $20 a month.)

According to this Pew Research Study, only 14% of U.S. adults have used ChatGPT for entertainment, education, or work. Of those, only 35% felt ChatGPT was extremely or very useful. That’s less than 5% of U.S. Adults getting true value from ChatGPT.

Why ChatGPT Isn’t Working For You

So what's the problem for those who have tried ChatGPT?

There are two big ones. The first is that many people don't know how to write a good prompt. The second is that they don't think to give the tool the proper context it needs to provide a quality answer.

Mic drop? Let's explore these more in our next section.

How To Better Use ChatGPT

Fundamentally, any output from ChatGPT is based on an input called a prompt. Good inputs = good outputs.

To get the best results, you'll need to provide ChatGPT with a clear prompt, supported by plenty of context around your situation. There are lots of great resources on prompt writing (sometimes called prompt engineering). We love this one from Zapier

Providing Context

In my experience, it helps to think of ChatGPT as a coworker (I've used ChatGPT almost every day since it came out). Often, when working with ChatGPT on a project, I'll open a new conversation with something like:

“Hey Chat GPT! Today we are going to work together to write a blog about The Ultimate ChatGPT Prompt Generator For Ecommerce Marketing. To begin, I am going to paste a bunch of context below. Don't worry about writing anything yet. [insert context here]”

And then I'll provide WHATEVER may be applicable to the project I'm working on. Don't worry too much about formatting; ChatGPT is good with that.

Context for Blog Posts

For a blog post like this, I'll share an outline, keywords, key messages/value propositions, CTA, and maybe even some rough copy. I don't ask ChatGPT to write the entire blog for me, but I'll use the chat to get feedback on different sections, seek help with proofreading, and ensure I'm hitting my keywords or messaging.

Context for Case Studies

When I'm writing a case study, I'll often share critical snippets from the interview, context about the client, and examples of the structure and style of our past case studies. Armed with that context, ChatGPT becomes a vital tool in ensuring my case study accurately reflects the value I want to convey.

You can provide as little or as much situational context as you need. Just remember, ChatGPT's combined input and output have a limit of around 2,000 words (roughly four single-spaced pages).

Writing Quality ChatGPT Prompts

To write quality prompts, the key is clarity and any additional context (yes, more context). Below are some examples of good vs. bad prompts, framed in the context of talking to your coworkers.

Scenario 1: Brainstorming for a Campaign

  • Bad Prompt: "Give me some campaign ideas."
  • Problem: The type or goal of the campaign isn't specified.
  • Good Prompt: "Can you suggest some innovative marketing campaign ideas for promoting our new line of eco-friendly products?"

Scenario 2: Understanding product features

  • Bad Prompt: "Explain our products."
  • Problem: Which product or feature to focus on is not defined.
  • Good Prompt: "Can you explain the unique features of our latest smartwatch compared to previous models?"

Scenario 3: Addressing customer concerns

  • Bad Prompt: "Some customers are unhappy. Why?"
  • Problem: The specific product or issue concerning the customers isn’t described.
  • Good Prompt: "Based on recent feedback, why are customers expressing concerns about the durability of our sports headphones?"

And remember, you're rarely going to get it right on your first try. Just like in real life, you can give feedback and ask for revisions. See below:

The first output was good, but not exactly what I needed. So I provided some feedback.

This next output was just right. And you just read three scenarios from it above ;)

I know what you're probably thinking, "Shoot, does this mean I have to go back to school to learn the art of prompt writing?"

Nope! We had a feeling you'd ask, so we built the perfect free tool for you.

More on this in the next section.

This all sounds fantastic, let's bring it to life and walk through an example together.

How To Build a Quality Prompt With the ChatGPT Prompt Generator

For our example, let's pretend Triple Whale is a clothing brand that creates data-inspired and ocean-themed products for ecommerce operators. Like this one!

To promote the release of these hoodies, we want to write a compelling email that introduces the hoodie and entices people to buy with free shipping.

Let's start by trying to do this with regular old ChatGPT:

Not great; it feels very cheesy and made up a bunch of incorrect facts that I didn't ask for.

Now, Let’s try again the Ultimate Chat GPT Prompt Generator.

Here is the filled-out email copy prompt template.

And here is the output!

This is much better. With the Ultimate ChatGPT Prompt Generator, our content is not only on-brand but also engaging. It effectively conveys the value of our product in an easily digestible manner.

Pro tip: If you aren’t in love with the first output, you can make any desired changes to your template and generate the content again! We’ve fine-tuned our GPT model to have some creativity like a marketer, so each time you generate your content it will be slightly different!
