How Iron Neck Leverages Lighthouse Alerts to Maximize Efficient Spend

Challenges

2023 has been a crazy year for advertisers, with multiple ad platform glitches disturbing business as usual. The Iron Neck team keeps a close pulse on their paid spending, optimizing for the most efficient ad spend as possible. The team typically checks their performance first thing in the morning, throughout the business day, and again before calling it a night. But when strange things happen during off-hours, it can often take hours to catch.

Solution

Kevin Heuer, Iron Neck’s Digital Marketing Manager, now checks Triple Whale’s Lighthouse multiple times a day to prevent wasted spending. Since using the feature in February of 2023, he’s already caught three major spend anomalies, and been able to avoid thousands of dollars in inefficient spend as a result.

“Our Google spend was up 4626% in an hour. It basically spent $444 at 5:00 AM, where we would typically spend about $13 to $38 per hour. So I caught that really quick. I woke up, checked Triple Whale, and I made the changes. The anomaly detection has just been saving us lately." - Kevin Heuer, Digital Marketing Manager, Iron Neck

Strategy

Iron Neck now uses Lighthouse anomaly detection alerts to review any unusual spikes in spend, CPM’s, and any other performance changes that seem irregular for the brand. The team runs the majority of their paid advertising on Facebook and Google, with a significant amount of their Google spend running through Youtube Ads. Check out few examples of how they have used Lighthouse in action:

  • Identifying Audience Anomalies: In March of 2023, Iron Neck uploaded new ads to Facebook and set a strict cost cap. From 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM one evening, the team noticed that they had spent nearly $10,000 - way beyond their standard daily ad spend of $1,000 - $2,000 per day on Facebook. A Lighthouse alert notified the team, and they realized that their ads were served to an expanded audience, thus drastically increasing their spend. Due to this alert, they were able to adjust the campaign before it continued the out-of-control spending.
  • Identifying CPM Anomalies: In April, a major Meta glitch occurred, causing many ad accounts to spend their entire day’s worth of budget (or greater) within just a few hours one morning. The Iron Neck team had a much better experience than their industry peers - Lighthouse alerted them of the anomaly early, allowing them to catch it at about 45% of daily spend. They were able to pause their campaigns and save the wasted spend before it was too late.
  • Identifying Spend Anomalies: Lighthouse recently caught a Youtube advertising glitch, likely saving the Iron Neck team thousands of dollars. Kevin received an anomaly alert indicating that the brand’s Google spend spiked over 4,000% within just one hour. The team quickly made changes in their Google account in order to avoid any additional wasted spend.

During the glitch, we spent money on a very irrelevant audience. But if we would've let it go any longer – and trust me, we would've – if we didn’t check Triple Whale and look into it. So Lighthouse was truly our lighthouse that night.
